Jojah heads to Tampa this weekend to play some good ultimate teams and work on their tan.

Warm Up is a round robin tournament comprised of several teams with legitimate goals of playing on Sunday at Nationals this season.

Bids for Regionals- Although this is the first tournament of the season and blah blah blah, these games matter. A lot. For reference as to how important getting bids for your region can be, see Jojah's second place finish last year at Regionals and subsequent absence from Nationals.

Weather- It's going to rain. Probably a lot. This gives Jojah the opportunity to show some mettle and get it done in the mud and the yuck.

Today, Jojah competed in the first day of its first tournament this season on the campus of North Carolina State University.

Joining ten returners from last season's Southeast Regional runner-up team are fourteen tryout hopefuls.

Jojah's day was by most accounts a success. The team went 3-0 in pool play against Davidson, Duke, and half of UNCW. In the crossover game UGA broke Appalachian State's offense on the final point to squeeze out a 15-13 victory and secure the overall top seed.

Tomorrow morning at 10:00 am, Jojah begins its road to hopefully a tournament victory against James Madison.

In addition to a great tournament, Jojah is also partnering with USA Ultimate's College Season Training and Recruitment (STAR) program. Players from nearby elite teams, including 2009 Open Club National Champion Chain Lightning and perennial Nationals Qualifier Ozone, will be leading both team and individual skills clinics over the course of the weekend. Tim Morrill of Morrill Performance will also be leading fitness and training-related sessions at the tournament. Teams will have the option to pre-register for a variety of sessions that will be available during their bye rounds and during time slots specifically scheduled for the clinics.

Jojah welcomes you to a new and exciting school year at the University of Georgia!

Fall in Athens is known for many things: catching up with friends, going back to the world of academia, football games, and certainly Fall League Ultimate.

Fall League is a fantastic way to meet new people while playing ultimate in a positive environment.

Pick up games (free ultimate!) start August 16 and continue every Tuesday and Thursday until the first day of league play, September 6.

The cost for league is $25 (which includes a T-Shirt).

There was a seriousness Sunday at regionals. Jojah was backed up against the wall and needed to win all their games to keep the season alive.

Wide open lines were called throughout the first three games and the culmination of months of hard work ran roughshod over feisty LSU, Alabama, and Tennessee squads.

The finals against Florida is a game that no member of this years team will ever forget.

Thanks to all of our fans and supporters for a great season.

Georgia loses four members of their team to graduation this year:

Georgia beat Georgia State, Florida-B, and UCF in up and down streaky Jojah fashion.

Georgia drops a close game to Tech.

It was hot outside today.

Tomorrow Georgia finishes pool play against Alabama and LSU to see if they can qualify for bracket play.

Georgia travels to sunny Tallahassee for the Southeast regional tournament. In addition to the change in region, there also is one more variable unfamiliar to the team. There is only one bid to Nationals coming out of the region, so the team only has one option to continue on this season.. win.

Because all tournament formats handed down by the USAU have to be interesting, the fourteen team field will be split into two pools where the top two teams from each pool advance to the semifinals.

Georgia realized one goal this weekend, while falling short of another.

Saturday

Georgia only played three games in short succession Saturday afternoon. Starting with University Tennessee-Chattanooga Swamp Donkey. Although Jojah came out with a little rust and number of unforced errors in the first half it was pretty obvious that Georgia had their opposition outmatched. Georgia gives up the first goal of the game and doesn't look back, taking half 7-1 and putting away the game 13-4. Highlights of the game include: Elliott Erickson completing a greatest to fellow rookie Mac Little. Tom Ball completes an upline assist... with his LEFT hand. Insanity.

Jojah followed up their romp of UTC with a match-up against a young program known as Georgia State Underground. This game started off fast for the dawgs with 3 straight breaks as it looked like the team was getting their form back, contesting every throw and cut on defense and moving the disc with great efficiency on offense. To Georgia State's credit, when Jojah got complacent they made them pay. But the bottom line was once again Jojah was too big and fast and they win another game 13-3. Highlights of the game include: Michael Young getting a shoulder high layout block and catching a goal to complete the bookends, Rookies generally doing work, and some guy from Georgia State wearing five fingers shoes while playing.

The last game of the day for UGA was against Georgia Southern. Georgia Southern was far and away the most athletic team Georgia played on Saturday, but the defensive came out attacking early and broke twice to start the game. Georgia Southern threw a curveball in the form of a zone defense that made the Georgia offense work hard to convert opportunities and they were able to break back to put the game back on serve before Hayden Fletcher Fartline, returning from injury, made several diving plays that helped Jojah break to take half 7-6. Georgia's offense locked it up and put the team in position to win the game on defense and the team breaks Southern one more time to win 13-11. Highlights of this game include: Fletcher gave Jojah a ton of effort and lifted the team through lulls in the team's intensity with insane layouts, Matt Bailey made probably the most insane catch of the tournament for the team in a trailing edge snag of a toss from Charlie Herrig for the score, and Birdo threw a Callahan.

By winning all of their games on Saturday, Georgia locked up a spot at the Regionals tournament and a meeting with Tennessee in the conference finals for the following morning.

Georgia slept well Saturday night after an excursion to Golden Corral. Matt Hess also loves wasabi more than any person should.

Easter Sunday!

Georgia slept in a little Sunday morning and got in a good long warm-up before their championship match-up with the University of Tennessee Agent Orange.

Tennessee was certainly the most talented opponent the team faced on the weekend, and first eight points of the game went to serve before Georgia could prevail to get the first break and go ahead 5-4, but the advantage didn't last for long as Tennessee got their break back to go ahead 6-5 and get back on serve. After converting the O-point, the dawgs seized an opportunity generated by Javid Aceil's defense and broke to take half.

Receiving in the second half Georgia converted again to go up 8-6 with a down field connection from Caleb "General Lee" Edwards to Matt Bailey. The defense feeling the mood came down hungry on Tennessee and forced a quick turnover and completed an easy fast break score to take the team's biggest lead of the game 9-6.

Tennessee locked it up and converted their next offensive possession and followed it with a strategic change and started throwing a zone defense at the Jojah offense. The zone proved to be super effective against the team's offense, partly because of Tennessee's execution and partly because of an absence of execution on the part of the offense. The next time Georgia scores is to tie the game at 10's though and after the defense failed to get a break back, Tennessee's zone did not and things were looking very dark for Georgia at a 12-10 score UT advantage.

Jojah rallied to execute the offensive possession and get the crucial break back to tie the game at 12's forcing a game into extra points. Georgia traded points to 14's and pulled to Tennessee for the final point of the game. The defense was tenacious and all down field cutters were shut down, with nowhere to go the UT handler had no choice put to force a dump pass that wasn't open courtesy of Elliott Erickson and Jojah was able to set up an offense on the goal line. Max Leonard looked off a couple of open cuts before tossing a flick to Elliott, but the two were unable to connect and Tennessee got the disc back. For all the teams remaining effort, it was for naught as Tennessee finished the game running a majority of their offense (as they had all game) through their captain Phil Brock.

For the second straight year Georgia finished second place in Sectional/Conference play heading into the regional tournament.

This is the beginning of Jojah's 2011 post season run.

The team (at the time of this post) is getting ready to travel to Knoxville "The Marble City" Tennessee for the inaugural Southern Appalachian D-I Conference tournament.

Georgia's schedule for tomorrow looks like this:

There are five bids to the regional tournament and nine teams in the field. Math says that Georgia shouldn't be terribly worried about extending their post-season into regionals.

Captain Caleb Edwards seems optimistic given the odds, "It's unfortunate that three teams had to drop out. Five bids to regionals is a lot for nine teams. I'm not too good at math but it seems to me that we have a good chance at making it."

Matt Bailey, 5th year player/Captain/Gentleman, doesn't care for probability, "I think the team is confident heading into the weekend. We have five bids but won't need any of the last four. Also, Caleb is not good at math."

Easterns 2011 by all accounts did not turn out as Jojah had planned.

Saturday

Georgia played 3 pool play games to start their day. I would give a more detailed game by game recap but unfortunately each game followed the same script. Georgia battles early and shows each team that they are physically able to match up against them and holds serve for awhile, then Georgia makes mental errors with the disc (throw aways, drops, poor decisions) and the errors pile up leading to blow out losses to Wisconsin (15-5) and Colorado (15-5) and a more respectable/more painful loss to Michigan (12-9 after being up 8-7).

Jojah faced California in their crossover game and the emotional and physical wear of a day caught up to the team. Unable to execute offensively, California wins 14-8.

Sunday

The men of Athens found themselves in unfamiliar territory on Sunday morning, out of contention for the tournament championship. The surreal weekend continued for Georgia as they dropped a game to UNCW 15-6 after being tied at 3's and losing again to Virginia 15-3 after starting the game losing 9-0.

Georgia's final game on the weekend was recorded as a forfeit, but it should be known that Jojah's rookies faced off Cornell's rookies in a game to 7. The rookies put on a clinic for Cornell, flying blocks and relentless cutting on the part of the rooks earned them a W and helped ease Georgia's heavy hearts on the way out of Wilmington.

College Terminus

Needless to say there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth within Jojah following Easterns, but the sun rose again on Monday and Georgia rose also, ready to learn from a weekend full of... teachable moments. Fortunately they have the chance to get over last weekend with College Terminus, Jojah's last tournament before the College Series.

For those of you familiar with College Terminus tournaments of years past the following will not surprise you.

There will be weather.

Georgia has games Saturday at the Georgia Soccer Park against Illinois, Dartmouth, North Carolina, and Oberlin College. Full tournament schedule found here.

Pre-quarters

As a result of Georgia's streaky Saturday and unfavorable point differential, a North Carolina State rematch awaited the team early Sunday morning. Learning about how an abbreviated warm-up can affect your play the previous day, Jojah jogged the parking lot and did their pre-game routine in tennis shoes. The effects of this were apparent early in their first game, rattling off three breaks to start and not looking back. Georgia rolls a scrappy NCST squad 15-8.

Quarters

Georgia met a hot Michigan State Burning Couch in this round. Georgia was playing the roll of underdog for the first time in the tournament, so it was a combination of uncharted territory and maybe some trepidation that led the dawgs to make some uncharacteristic mistakes and give up two breaks early. Jojah calls a timeout, regroups, and brings the fight back to Michigan State. Offense executed at probably their highest level of the tournament and Defense threw a zone defense that Michigan State had no answer for. Georgia plays a very solid game against a good team and wins 12-10.

Semifinals

Deja vu! Georgia meets Ohio State University LeadBelly in the semifinal round. The team's legs work very effectively in this game, but their minds seem to be left behind. Jojah threw the same zone that worked so well in the Michigan State game at Ohio State with mixed results. On one hand it forced some very low-percentage throws over the top, on the other hand these throws were converted more often than not. To OSU's credit, they converted on the mistakes Georgia made with the disc and threw many different defensive looks at the team. For all their fighting and effort, UGA only has a 12-9 loss to show for it.

3rd/4th placement game

Georgia, obviously deflated from their disappointing loss to Ohio State, had to face the other team from Ohio (also known as Ohio University). In the first half Georgia played flat, the sidelines were silent, and the fans were not entertained. Ohio takes this half 8-4. A crossroads at halftime for Georgia, mail it in and call it a tournament or play Georgia ultimate. Fortunately for the morale of the team, Jojah chose the latter and fought hard to work their way back into the game. UGA wins the half 8-7, but they lose the game 15-12.

Noteworthy things

Elliott Erickson is asserting himself as a force on the D-line, getting huge blocks and being unstoppable cutting under/preserving possessions for the defensive offense.
Dan Lily played some good offense. Also Michael Young, Matt Hess, Devin Cox, and Josh "Birdo" Lowell played fantastic together in zone defense.
Ohio State went on to lose in the finals game to Michigan, 15-10. They also lost the finals of T-Town by the same margin to Florida after playing UGA. Coincidence?
Rookies jumped on a grenade, inspiring Charlie Herrig to do the same.
So many parents and fans came and watched, which was incredible. Thanks to everyone who came out, Jojah loves their fans.

Jojah played three games today per some sort of cross over pool play.

Semi-regular tweets tell the point by point story of the day, but in summary the Georgia men had a difficult time playing with intensity until they found themselves in early deficits against both North Carolina State and Clemson. Georgia pulled out both games by breaking their way to half and playing solid second halves to the win (15-10 against NCST, 12-11 over Clemson). Georgia vs. Notre Dame was a different style game. UGA breaks three times to start the game, and despite a Notre Dame two break run to tie the game at 5's Jojah rolls to a 14-8 victory.

Neat things that happened today:

Mike Young had crazy flying blocks on defense and great possession saving catches on offense.
Mike Peters didn't get any shorter, made some clutch deep plays on both sides of the disc.
Matt Bailey played solid ultimate, rookies tried to kill him with terrible throws.
The rookies found a way to persevere on an extreme marathon point with Notre Dame.
Charlie Herrig made the play of the day. On universe point against Clemson Charlie goes upline for a back hand, makes an athletic catch and ends up getting wrecked by a Clemson player trying to poach the block. Charlie completes the catch/mini-concussion, and throws the game winning assist to Brian Walter.
Jojah ran the longest cool down lap ever today. Seriously, like a kilometer.

Jojah plays Sunday morning in the pre-quarters at 9:00 against a currently unknown opponent.

Over the last few weeks Mother Nature has limited Jojah from getting the field practice they would ideally get leading into a tournament. The lack of practice was a motif of the weekend as the men worked out the dynamics of playing with a new team.

Saturday

Georgia played five games in a row for pool play. Although the Dawgs didn't blow away the competition with particularly clean play their edge in team depth, endurance, and tenacity proved to be the difference as they rolled over-matched squads from Mississippi, Vanderbilt, Harding, and Rhodes.

The fifth game of the day was Florida State, which made for the most dramatic game of the day thanks to big plays, chippy exchanges, and hard running from both teams. The first half ended on serve with UGA up 6-5. In the second half Georgia goes on a three break run in the second half only to have FSU come charging back and take two for themselves. Jojah closes out the game amidst some questionable calls/discussions about calls from both teams, 11-9.

Other important things that happened Saturday:

-Hayden Fletcher Hartline breaks his collarbone. Brodie Smith was not involved.

-Mike Peters gets leveled by a former University of Alabama football player in a showcase game.

SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAY

Jojah's quarterfinals opponent was the home team, the University of Alabama. Tim Brady and Alabama pushed Georgia to the brink and even had a late lead at 11-9, but Georgia's legs won the game and broke Bama on universe point to win 15-14.

The semifinals brought Georgia to a different field for the first time all weekend and to an Ohio State team that walked over Williams in the quarters 15-7. Jojah's legs carry them to half on serve with Ohio State 8-7. Coming out in the second half to serious up-down field wind, Georgia's lack of practice rears its head with some unfortunate breaks and the dawgs go down 12-9. With one more big push left, Jojah ties the game at 12's. The next point proved to be the critical moment in the game. Georgia gets the turn and works the disc with patience, dumping and swinging, and running some of the better defensive offense of the tournament before turning it over on the goal line. After that it was downhill, OSU converted and broke UGA twice to end the game 15-13.

Neat things on Sunday

-Hedges threw a bomb to Max in the OSU game. There was much rejoicing in England, where his grandfather is a knight.

-Charlie iced some bros.

-Slade's head busted itself open on an OSU player.

-Elliott Erickson played some crazy defense and demoralized/shut down some of the best players for Alabama/Ohio State.

That isn't even the most exciting thing about this weekend, because among the 26 members of Jojah travelling to play this weekend veterans Matt Bailey, Charlie Herrig, and Brian Walter supported by rookies Tyler Halle and Michael Young are all making their first tournament appearances with 2011's team.

Excitement is the word. Because after two and a half months and after a winter break of a little blood and a lot of sweat and vomit, Jojah takes the field of competition again.

Georgia gets the third overall seed this weekend so Saturday's schedule looks like this:

As fate has it, 2010 was not the year for Jojah to capture the illusive Classic City Classic championship, but for the first time since 2004 a team not from Madison, Wisconsin won the tournament... (Congratulations to the University of Florida)

The weekend was a tale of two different days for the dawgs.

Saturday

Georgia started its morning warm-up a little tardy, as many members of the teams were still taking care of the loose ends of running a tournament. The rushed warm-up had little carry over into the first game, as Jojah got a break on the first point of the game. Despite looking a little out of sync at times, Georgia works out most of the kinks and moves forward with a 13-7 victory.

The second game of pool play was against Kennesaw State. Jojah was able to contain the people who throw to Taylor "Tree" Goforth and roll to a 13-4 victory.

Georgia has a bye round after that game and starts back with "Team 3" the University of Alabama. Georgia get two breaks early to go up 3-1, but this momentum stalls a little as Bama introduces the first true zone defense the dawgs see this season. Alabama gets a break back and Jojah takes half at 7-6. Although it wasn't recorded what Coaches Davis Waller and Rob Herrig said at half time, it must have been pretty incredible because Jojah's second half against Alabama was probably their most dominant half of the tournament. Running the competition ragged was a motif of the half, but big plays by Fletcher Hartline and Elliott Erikson kept the team's energy high and Jojah puts together a perfect half to win 13-6.

UNC Darkside was the most even match up for Jojah on Saturday, as both teams had rolled through the rest of the pool. Darkside had brought a small, boisterous army and with that came a a much higher level of intensity. Jojah rose their level of play and produced many defensive plays including lay out blocks by Michael Slade, Tom Ball, and Michael Peters. Play of the game: deep throw goes up to UNC receiver and Daniel Lily closes and skies for a huge block in the back of the end zone, resulting in one of 3 breaks Jojah gets in the game. The dawgs grind out a 10-9 win at hard cap.

Sunday

Georgia came out Sunday morning with two more players (the formidable Birdo and some guy named Matt Hess) but with much less in the way of team energy compared to Saturday.

Jojah played the University of Virginia Night Train in the morning quarterfinals match-up. This game was all Virginia as they capitalized on all of Georgia's mistakes. Georgia loses in a sloppy 15-4 rout.

Jojah's next opponent was the University of South Carolina. South Carolina had made some noise on Saturday, beating Virginia and challenging Florida, and they brought the fight to Georgia early getting three early breaks. Georgia began to take back the momentum with a few breaks of their own but it wasn't enough as the teams traded points from early in the second half all the way to a 15-14 South Carolina victory.

The final game of the weekend was played against James Madison University. This game was close for awhile and Georgia shows spots of energy and good play, but the tournament had finally gotten the best of the Dawgs. Jojah loses to JMU and finishes 8th in the field.

Fall has set in on the hills of north east Georgia and the time has come again for a tournament that has become the standard bearer for Fall college ultimate through a tradition of excellence in how the tournament is conducted and its competition. Classic City Classic. Many themes from last college season are being carried over into this weekend. The reigning National Champions, the University of Florida, trying to mitigate the losses of Brodie Smith and Chris Gibson. The UNC-W Seamen trying to build on a National's semifinal finish from last year. Regional realignments by USA Ultimate breaking up old rivalries and potentially starting new ones.

For many teams the biggest theme is that shortcomings and successes of the last season have become history and now they must start over.

Jojah, at this moment, is the same as many teams, a group of young men trying to find its identity for the season through hard work and play. The following is a transcription of conversations with Jojah captains Tom Ball, Caleb Edwards, and Charlie Herrig about what they think about this weekend.

What are Jojah's greatest strengths going into this weekend?

Tom Ball: I think I'm going to say that our greatest strength is going to be our depth, both within lines and across lines. The rookie class this year is going to be extremely strong, and last year's rookies have improved tremendously. I am excited to see how many different, but still effective, D lines we will be able to throw at the other teams. I am also confident that we will have very few weak links. I think our offensive lines particularly will be very deep. I anticipate we will make use of our fourth and fifth cutting options.

Charlie Herrig: Jojah's greatest strength is the return of a group of veterans that know what high level ultimate is. These veterans know how to achieve high level ultimate with fundamentals. (i.e. dump swing.)

Caleb Edwards: Our greatest strength is that our team everyone is pumped to play this weekend.

What about Jojah's Weaknesses?

Tom Ball: We lost a number of incredible playmakers last year. I think we may have some difficulties, particularly early in the weekend, with people waiting to cut, expecting Pete or Taylor to take over, and then realizing too late that we can't just let Pete and Taylor take over anymore. We may look a little like fawns, with players still trying to find their legs as they move into more prominent roles.

Charlie Herrig: Our biggest weakness is that we don't know what type of team we are. We lost 11 seniors and had a group of veterans had been playing together for three or more years.

Caleb Edwards: Our greatest weakness is that we have not had very much practice time as a full team.

With the much ballyhooed turnover from last year's roster, who do you believe is going to step up and become a major role player for Jojah?

Tom Ball: Max Leonard. He was an integral player for Atlanta Rival this year. He was a very strong player going into the summer, and has only improved. He is going to do some spectacular things this weekend. I expect Fletcher Hartline to lead the D line. He will get flying blocks. From the rookies, I expect Elliot to get a lot of attention and put in a very early bid for FotY.

Charlie Herrig: Our returning veterans will look to take the load this year and try and get back to college nationals. We have veterans such as Cameron Macke trying to anchor the D-line with his huge hucks, Fletcher Hartline getting d's and going to his home, David Hooten playing stellar d against the team's top players. On the offensive side we have veterans such as Captain Tom Ball, Max Leonard, Caleb Edwards, and Nate Kelly looking to lead jojah this weekend. Tom Ball brings this group together by his willingness to work for every inch of space. Look for Caleb Edwards and Nate Kelley to be primary cutters looking for Max 'white man can jump' Leonard to go deep. This weekend we are out with one of the best cutters in college Matthew Bailey. He is studying in England, but make sure to keep your ears open for him in the spring. We also have many rookies that are going to step up such as Elliot Erickson, Mike Peters, and Tyler Haskell.

Caleb Edwards: Everyone has a chance to step up this year. It will be exciting to see who steps up

and plays huge at CCC.

What teams are you most excited to watch and play against this weekend?

Tom Ball: I always get excited to play against North Carolina teams. Our rivalry with UNC predates my presence on the team but I feel very much a part of it. I always get excited to play against them. UNC-W too. We have had a few incredible match-ups in the last couple of years. I would love to get the chance to play against them. Florida, of course. I want to see who their new 7 are going to be. Tech I'd love to see as well.

Charlie Herrig: I'm looking forward to seeing how Florida is going to be after losing many of their starters. Many teams come from the region, so I'm excited who makes a statement. I hear USC has played quite well this fall.

Caleb Edwards: It sounds like most of the other teams lost alot of their big time players, so I am excited to see what every team looks like.

What is Footsteps?

"Footsteps is an organization at the University of Georgia dedicated to raising awareness and promoting the eight U.N. Millennium development goals to students of all backgrounds across the nation and to stimulate future activism through creative projects, dialogue, and action."

Many members of UGA Men's Ultimate Club B-Team (the Chillydawgs) are active in this organization including Nikil Kashyap, Joseph Najjar, Matt McClure, Mikey Salter, Willy Hughes, and Brett Benowitz.

Their goal is to raise about $13,200 to build an elementary school in Mali, which is one of the poorest countries in the world, with a literacy rate below 50%.

This past weekend, Jojah went to the USA Ultimate College Nationals. In pool A, Jojah finished second, beating Oregon, Middlebury, and UCSD. In the final game of the pool, Jojah gave up a large half time lead to Cornell, who beat us 15-13. In the pre-quarters game, we lost to Minnesota 15-12 to end our season.

Here are a couple of highlights from Nationals :

"The Catch?"

The game is 13-14 in our favor against Middlebury as we pull the disc. Someone got a sweet D, only to have it thrown out of bounds by Taylor Nilan to a wide open Matt Bailey (sorry Matt). Middlebury turns the disc over again and works it to their goal line. Taylor Nilan swings the disc to Peter Dempsey, who sees a streaking Charlie Herrig. Pete leads Charlie a little too much, who lays out and stretches out for the goal. Charlie lands in the end zone first with a foot down; however, the disc looks like it was thrown out his hand in celebration or jarred from his hand from the ground immediately after impact. Charlie looks up at the observer, who is calling him in bounds, and assumes the catch was being called good and a goal. Charlie is a guy who plays by the rules and listens well during player/rule disputes. None of the Middlebury players or the Jojah players thought the disc was down. Also, the fact that the catch was on the break side of the field away from other players made it tough for anyone to see it better. We were alerted by the observer, Jason Weddle, that the catch was a drop after the game and that he was puzzled that Middlebury didn't see the call. Middlebury was busy talking about Peter traveling on the throw, which received a heated argument from the Middlebury players and the observer. We honestly thought it was a goal until we saw the video replay. The Middlebury player right next to him assumed Charlie caught it, as did the rest of the Jojah and Middlebury players.

"Peter Dempsey gets 4th in the Callahan Voting"

During the Oregon game, Peter Dempsey was everywhere. Unfortunately, his play at Nationals wouldn't sway any voters, as Oregon's Eli Friedman won the Callahan on Saturday night. Peter Dempsey was 4th in the voting and was one recognized in front of the entire Nationals' crowd. The top 5 were : George Stubbs, Peter Dempsey, Sam Kanner, Brodie Smith, and Eli Friedman. Thank you to everyone who voted for Peter Dempsey for Callahan.

"Cornell with ANOTHER Comeback"

Those pesky Cornell Buds found ANOTHER way to beat Jojah after Jojah having a large lead. At Easterns, Jojah went up 6-1 only to lose on double game point. At Terminus, Jojah was up by 5 breaks before Cornell finished the game on a 6 game run. At Nationals, those Cornell guys were down 9-4 before staging an epic comeback that shocked Jojah and ended their season. The Cornell defense came away with block after block on Jojah receivers and converted their breaks. Here is the video of game point for Cornell. Gosh, dang, it. Congratulations Cornell on being a Nationals' semifinalist.

Athleticism

Peter Dempsey may be the best athlete to play for Jojah ultimate. Peter has been a play maker since his freshman year. Defensively, he is able to slow down or neutralize the best player on the other team and help his teammates with their assignments. People know Peter for his high flying defensive plays, his closing speed, and his reaction speed/agility. This year, Peter made the transition to offense because we lost a lot of offensive weapons last year. Pete has been our offensive play maker. If you need to see Peter's offensive production, please check his stats from the Jojah blog.

Pete has developed into a better all-around player year after year. For his first two years, Peter was primarily a star defender/deep cutter. His main throw was a laser huck which no one could catch. Since then, Peter has transitioned himself into a dynamic handler and cutter. This year, I remember watching Peter shred zone defenses with his low IO throws and his over the top throws. Whatever skill Jojah has needed, Pete has filled in and learned it.

Sportsmanship

Peter is well known for playing for his team. As his teammate for 4 years, I have watched Pete exhibit "good spirit" or sportsmanship throughout his prolific career. He is level headed during intense game situations, he listens to other people's arguments, and he doesn't try to cheat people out of calls.

Leadership

Pete is an invaluable piece to the Jojah team. For the past 2 years, Pete has served as the defensive captain for the Jojah team; however, Peter has been the defensive role model for the past 4 years. Dedication

This past summer, Pete wanted to get better so that he could give Jojah a chance at making/winning Nationals this year, so he joined Chain Lightning. Pete's summer/fall with Chain Lightning taught him a lot about leadership, as he was able to play with some of the country's best ultimate players. Pete's performance on Chain Lightning reminded me of Will Neff's performance last year with Ironside. In the finals of Club ultimate, Pete came up with a near Callahan lay out. It was one of those quick reflex plays that Pete does on a regular basis.

Ideal Ultimate Player

If you think about the ideal ultimate player, a Peter Dempsey type player comes to mind. His workhorse work ethic, his ability to perform and dominate the highest level of ultimate, his insane athleticism, his sportsmanship, and his character all make Peter Dempsey the ideal ultimate player in the college arena.

Lastly, it has been an amazing adventure playing with Peter. I credit a lot of my improvement to watching Peter play and hustle. He has motivated me and other guys on our team to stop talking and sell out on every play. It is this mentality that has enabled me to become a better player, leader, and person (in the long run).

When Pete caught the Nationals birth catch, it was fitting that everyone sprinted towards Peter and hugged him and celebrated with him. He is our leader.

What a weekend! We took the third bid to Nationals at the Atlantic Coast Regionals this past weekend in Tallahassee, FL. That's the 6th year in a row that the Jojah Ultimate program will be headed to UPA College Nationals. Another interesting statistic, Peter Dempsey is UGA's first member to go 5 for 5 with Nationals appearances.

Georgia Tech Tribe - We lost to Tech the past two times we played these guys. They beat us at both Terminus AND Sectionals (in front of all of our friends and family). Defense paved the way for this victory, as Taylor Nilan, Andrew Mistretta, Dustin Graham, and David Hooten played some of their best defense (and offense) of the year. After half, our offense came together and played as well as they have in the past. Peter Dempsey and Matthew Bailey came down with huge catches, and Rob Herrig beat his man everywhere, distributing the disc well.

Florida C - In our first game to go, it's okay to say that our offense wasn't clicking. After opening up the game 5 or 6 to nothing, we decided to focus on the third bid. Florida was playing as well as they have been. On top of getting beat 15-1, we lost Caleb Edwards for the rest of the year due to a broken collar bone (clavicle). Thanks Brodie! Dustin Graham caught our only game after destroying his man deep. We didn't have a single defensive point until half time.

Tennessee Agent Orange - In our game to go to the game to go, we were down most of this game. Chris Mullinix and the Tennessee team willed their way to a 9-6 lead before Jojah's defense started feeling all sexy and stuff. With a strong defensive presence from Charlie Herrig, Fletcher Hartline, Taylor Nilan's PMF, and Peter Dempsey, Georgia won this game 15-14.

Georgia Tech Tribe - In our last game to go, Jojah was focused from the beginning. The team was crashing all hucks and skying each other. Peter Dempsey was Jojah's monster this game, throwing goals, making insane defensive plays, and of course, catching the winning goal.

We will be traveling this weekend to play in the AC Regionals in Tallahassee, FL. To qualify for Nationals, we need to finish in the top 3. After a solid week of practice and a fun day down the river, Jojah is ready to compete. I will post the schedule when it becomes available.

This weekend, the Hodawgs are playing for a spot to go to Nationals at the AC Regional tournament. Today, they went 2-1 in pool play. They beat Central Florida 15-10 and Virginia Commonwealth 15-4. They lost to Emory 15-11.

In the crossover, they stayed alive by beating East Carolina 15-11.

Tomorrow morning, the Hodawgs try to earn a Nationals bid. Come out and support them in the morning at the IM fields.

This is what Georgia and South Carolina look like if it was one state. The new state looks like a sting ray or a bird with its wings out.

This weekend is the Georgia/South Carolina Sectionals at the UGA intramural fields. If the weather gets rainy, we will be going to Sandy Creek. This will be an exciting weekend because we get a lot of players back from injury (that weren't allowed to play in the past until they healed fully). Also, the level of competition at the Sectionals will be higher than the previous two years. Come on out to the IM fields this weekend to support us.

For our seniors, this will be their last home tournament ever. Our seniors include captains Peter Dempsey and Robert Herrig, who have been a constant source of motivation this year. Other seniors include old man David Benkeser, even older man Taylor Nilan, sneaky, sneaky Davis Waller, D Graham, and the human squid, Andrew Mistretta.

In 10 days the Series starts for Jojah at the Georgia/South Carolina Sectionals tournament in Athens, GA. The tournament will be played at the University of Georgia Intramural Fields. We are currently getting the back up fields secured in case of rain.

This is going to be a special tournament, as it is shaping up to be the most competitive Sectionals we've ever played in. We encourage all of our fans, family, and friends to attend the tournament. On Saturday night, Athens will have its annual Twilight Criterium, a bike race that circles the downtown area. Twilight is one of the best events Athens offers.

Delaware - Delaware had about 12 people on their team. Sean Keagan threw some nasty upwind hucks. We stopped playing after we went up early and had to beat them on double game point.

JMU - We won, not on double game point. Caleb Edwards learned to lay out, and boy was it pretty. Rookie Javid Aceil throws the game winner.

This past weekend was College Terminus in Atlanta, GA. We went 5-2 this weekend, going 4-0 on Saturday to win Pool A. On Sunday, we went 1-2, losing to Georgia Tech in the Quarterfinals and Cornell in the next game. The rain held off just enough to allow us to play on Sunday, finally.

SATURDAY

Kennesaw State University Owls (Score Reporter) -

Jojah defense had three defensive break runs in this game. We traded points with Kennesaw State until 2-1, when Jojah went on a defense run making the game 5-2. After trading points to 6-4, We got 3 more breaks to take the game to 10-4. We ended the game on a 3 point break run, making the score 13-5.

Nathan Kelly, Peter Dempsey, Dustin Graham, and Caleb Edwards all had 2 goals. Taylor Nilan led the team in assists with 3, followed by Peter Dempsey and Matthew Pimenta with 2 assists. Our offense did not get broken in this game. Steven Hedges was injured in this game, hurting his tender, elderly body going for a disc. He will be back next week in practice. Everyone on the active roster played.

Clemson Joint Chiefs (Score Reporter) -

The Joint Chiefs have put together a great season so far, which will make for a great GA/SC Sectionals tournament. Missing some of their top handlers, Clemson was still a force.

We traded points with Clemson until 3-3, when Jojah reeled off 2 defensive breaks, bringing the game to 5-3. Clemson scored and got back a break to bring the game to 5's. Jojah traded to take half 7-6. Jojah got 2 more breaks in the second half to bring the game to 12-8. Clemson got one more defensive break before Jojah won this game 13-10.

Our offense was broken twice in this game, right before half and right at the end of the game. Peter led the scoring with 4 goals and 5 assists. Rob Herrig and Matthew Bailey each caught 2 goals. Caleb Edwards also had 2 assists. Highlight of this game : Matt Bailey layout Callahan, his first Callahan ever.

Middlebury (Score Reporter) -

We traded with Middlebury until they broke us, making the game 3-1. Our offense put one in before our defense got 2 breaks in a row to bring the game to 4-3 Jojah. Jojah then took half 7-4 on a couple of more breaks. We opened the second half with 2 more breaks, making the score 9-4. It was at that point the Middlebury captain told us that they were going to play their reserves, as we started going deeper in our bench. The game ended 13-8 after a lot of trading and a break from each team.

Although the scoring statistics are correct for this game, our player statistics were off because they missed the first 6 points of the game. Of the statistics we had, Peter Dempsey once again had 5 assists and 1 goal of his own. Matthew Bailey led the team with 3 goals and 2 defensive blocks.

Dartmouth Pain Train (Score Reporter) -

Dartmouth broke us first, giving them the early 3-1 lead. Jojah got a break back to even the score at 3's. After 4's, Jojah broke Dartmouth until halftime, 7-4. After halftime, there were no breaks by either team. The final score Jojah 13, Pain Train 9.

Matthew Bailey led Jojah in scoring with 4 goals. Andrew Mistretta, Tom Ball, and Brian Walter all had 2 goals as well. Peter Dempsey and Robert Herrig put on a throwing clinic in a windy game with 5 assists and 3 assists respectively. Defensively, Matthew Bailey stepped up with 3 D's, followed by 2 D's from Peter Dempsey and David Hooten. Everyone on the active roster played.

SUNDAY

Elon Defcon 7 (Score Reporter) -

Jojah got the game's first break, taking the lead 3-1. Elon scores and generates 2 breaks, taking the lead 4-3. Jojah got those 2 breaks back quickly, winning the first half 7-5. With the score 8-7, Jojah got 3 breaks in a row to bring the game to 12-7. Traded the last two points to end the game at 13-8.

Walter led the team with 2 goals. The rest of the goals came from 11 other, different teammates. Peter Dempsey was an assists monster...again, with 5. Next in line? Matthew Bailey and Taylor Nilan with 2 assists. Fletcher Hartline, Matthew Bailey, Caleb Edwards, and Andrew Mistretta all had 2 Defensive blocks during the game. Fletcher got two in a single play. Our offense scored 6 points and were broken 3 times. Our defense scored 7 times.

Georgia Tech Tribe (Score Reporter) -

We traded with Georgia Tech until they got 2 breaks in a row, bringing the score to 5-2. They broke us to take half 7-3. We traded until they broke us one more time to make the game 10-6. We traded until the game ended 13-8.

Our defense came up with zero breaks. Jojah amassed 16 turnovers (most unforced) in this game and only generated 5 defensive blocks. Matthew Bailey had 4 goals (and 3 defensive blocks), followed by Tom Ball with 2 goals. Taylor Nilan and Peter Dempsey led the team with 2 assists.

Cornell Buds (Score Reporter) -

What a game to end on. This is the first time Georgia has played Cornell in quite some time (over 4 years).

Cornell got the first break to take the early lead at 4-2. Jojah's offense scored quickly; also, Jojah had 3 more breaks to take the 6-4 lead. Jojah took half at 7-5. Both teams traded points until 10-8 when Cornell decided, "Hey, let's break this team 4 straight times." Since they are men of their word, that's exactly what happened. Since some of their points took a long time (and we didn't start the game on time), the hard cap went into effect, and the Buds came out on top 12-10.

This was a hard loss. Both teams played with a lot of defensive intensity. Peter Dempsey scored 4 goals and Matt Bailey had 2 goals. Rob Herrig and Taylor Nilan led the team with 3 assists. Peter Dempsey had 3 defensive blocks, followed by Josh Lowell with 2.

Oregon Ego (Score Reporter) - I cannot remember the last time Georgia beat Oregon. This game was observed with some "experimental rules." How many times do you have to experiment the rules before they become accepted? The biggest change was that observers stalled.

We traded with Oregon for the first couple of points or so. Ego broke us first. Then, Peter Dempsey came up with a quick, layout D to spark the defensive run that took Jojah to half. There were a lot of big layouts and physical play from both sides. Both my memory and the recorded stats we have from the game seem inaccurate; therefore, I am going to conclude by giving the results : 13-11, Georgia over Oregon.

Stanford Bloodthirsty (Score Reporter) - The last time we beat Stanford was 3 years ago. Most recently, Stanford beat us at last year's Stanford Invite.

This game was a battle for Georgia to stop Stanford from throwing their flick hucks. Unfortunately, it took the entire game for Georgia to start converting its breaks. On game point for Jojah, both Taylor Nilan and Peter Dempsey came up with huge stops to keep Jojah in the game. In the end, Jojah came up with some crucial breaks to take the game 15-13.

Charlie Herrig hurt his elbow in this game while landing in an odd manner. He wasn't able to play the rest of the tournament. That wasn't cool.

Brownian Motion (Score Reporter) - After going 2-0 against some teams we haven't beat in a while, the entire Jojah team felt elated. Brown came into this game and punched us right in the mouth. Brown had a couple of speedy receivers that burned the Jojah D deep several times. Jojah was caught looking to our next game with Florida and were excited about going 2-0. Brown beats Jojah 13-11.

Florida Ultimate - Up to this point in the season, Florida had not lost a game. We were excited to play them, especially since they had been rolling everybody they played in usual Florida fashion. The game was similar to last year's game at Florida Warm Up because it started so late. By the last couple of points, both teams had trouble seeing the disc, as the sun had almost set.

The first half was exciting, as Georgia was able to come up with a couple of key breaks. Peter Dempsey was everywhere. We took half 7-4 against them after Peter Dempsey layed out for a Brian Walter backhand (which is rare, but beautiful). In the second half, Caleb Edwards tried his hardest to get Florida back into the game, getting hand blocked and throwing away a disc in two straight points which led to Florida breaks. Jojah eventually won this game 13-9.

SUNDAY

Colorado Mamabird (Score Reporter) - We needed to win this game in order to make it to the A-bracket semifinals rather than the B-bracket semifinals.

Looking at the stats from this game, Georgia only had 1 break in this game. We had a lot of opportunities to convert breaks, but we weren't able to complete our great amount of deep hucks. Colorado's consistent offense was too much for Jojah's defense. Colorado takes this game 13-9.

Wisconsin Hodags (Score Reporter) - Wisconsin beat us 13-11. Classic Wisconsin v. Georgia game. A lot of calls, a lot of yelling, and hard defense. Dave Benkeser came up huge with a couple of key defensive plays; unfortunately, Jojah waited too long to stage a come back. Wisconsin wins this game 13-11.

Florida Ultimate - After the first couple of points, Jojah started putting in the reserves after Florida's reserved broke the starting offense 2 straight times. The highlights from this game were Matthew Pimenta's defense and Justin Desandre's cutting and throwing. The game became especially entertaining when Florida turned the game into 500. Florida won both 500 and the game 11-6.

Last year's Stanford Invite experience was the exact opposite, going 0-8 and getting blanked for a half by Texas (nothing against Texas, but Jojah should have put at least scored 2 by half).

Fresh off of a victory in Charlotte, this Jojah team is excited about the opportunity to compete against some great competition.

Peter Dempsey turns old (23) today. Today, UGA beat Florida in basketball, despite the best efforts of Jeremy Price and Chris Barnes, who tried to lose the game for Georgia. Happy Birthday Peter Dempsey, we hope you have a great celebration.

In other Jojah ultimate news, Travis Smith is alive and well. Travis, Jojah's head ultimate coach, is vacationing in Oahu, Hawaii. After surviving the hype of a killer tsunami, Smith was found alive and well after he signed onto Gchat and said "Hey" to me. Travis described the Hawaii scene as ridiculous.

From our Gchat, Travis wrote :

This afternoon at the Rec Sports Complex, the UGA men's ultimate frisbee team ran out of marker cones during the dump swing drill. Jojah, a team that started the year with more than 90 cones, has lost about 80 cones throughout the season.

"Where are the freakin' cones? I thought we had, like, a million of them," exclaimed 4th year Matthew Bailey, in the middle of the drill. Bailey was "shocked" when he saw team captain Robert Herrig having to take away one of the end zones in order to set up the dump swing drill.

"It's not like the cones can walk away, they don't have legs," said rookie Fletcher Hartline, one of Jojah's defensive players. Fletcher suspects that a stack of our cones were taken by mistake.

To get more information about the Cone Dilemma, we sat down with Brian Walter. Here is the transcription of the interview :

JojahBlog: "Brian, who's responsibility is it to make sure Jojah keeps all of its gear from practice to practice?"
Brian Walter: "Since I have been on the team, it has always been on the rookies to keep up with the disc bag [the disc bag contains both frisbees and cones]. It's not a tough thing to do. Just after every practice, you pick up cones and get all the discs. It's pretty simple."
JB: "Have there been any changes this year with that routine?"
BW: "A little. We now leave a set of cones on the field for the D team, who practice after us. Before we leave the fields, we ask them for a set of cones in return. It's pretty important that we ask them before we leave every practice."
JB: "Where did all of those cones go, Brian?"
BW: "I have no idea, but when we find the guy who took them all, I envision something like that Mel Gibson movie Payback? Yeah, they got it comin' to them"
JB: "Brian, do you have anything to say to the person who stole all of the cones?"
BW: "Na man, I don't have much to say 'bout that."
JB: "Internet sensation Chatroulette: Contender or Pretender?"
BW: "Pretender, weak sauce."

Later in the practice, JojahBlog coverage was able to talk with the Underdawgs [UGA D Team], a suspect in the Jojah Cone case. Nick Hussein, Underdawgs coach, said the following :

"We started the year out with like 6 sets of cones. We now have 3 sets. The B team must have a lot of sets [of cones]."

Our interview with Nick Hussein didn't provide any leads, as we know the B team can't have our cones because they practice right beside us; however, Hussein was able to draw a sketch of a man he saw near our disc bag last week. He said he thought it was Hooten with sunglasses on, but then realized the "guy was like 40 years old."

"If we can't keep track of our cones, how do we expect to be a good team? [slamming a water bottle on the ground] We're running for every cone that is missing" said Peter Dempsey, a Jojah captain, in the team huddle. Coach Kevin Terry and Travis Smith, fresh off their first tournament wins as coaches, declined to comment about the missing cones because they were "shocked to think a team couldn't keep track of the cones."

Since the news of the Cone Dilemma has come out, Cameron Macke was elected Chief Cone Manager. Macke will now be in charge of the Cone Investigation and will be acting as the keeper of the cones. Macke has also been given unlimited resources to get to the bottom of the Cone Dilemma.

"Cam approached me about the position, telling me the theories he had behind the missing cones, which honestly seemed legit," said 4th year David Benkeser. "If there is anybody that will find these cones, it's going to be Cameron."

Macke was unavailable for interview, citing he had "a bunch of math homework and a lab due tomorrow." He was last seen getting in the car with fellow rookie, Nathan Kelly, discussing the use of the team camera as surveillance, buying blue cones for our team and seeing which teams/people end up with them, and Nate's hair.

This past weekend, UGA's Jojah upended Michigan State's Burning Couch in the championship game to take the title. In a weekend where most things did not go to plan, we were able to focus on our goal, which was to put ourselves in a position to win a championship. This is the third time in four years that Jojah has won this tournament. Last year, we won this tournament only to go 0-8 at the Stanford Invite. We hope history does not repeat itself.

Jojah alumnus, Alex Deckard, made the trip up to Charlotte to observe the team. Thank you Alex for coming up and supporting your team. It made a huge difference.

Here's a brief recap of the tournament :

FRIDAY NIGHT

5 Hotel rooms, 10 beds, only 11 players and 2 coaches. Most of our team was back in Athens waiting around until the roads cleared up. We also learned that our pool had a team dropped, so we had a 4 team pool while the other pools had 5 team.

SATURDAY

We were supposed to start our first round at 9 am. The start time was pushed back until 11 am so the fields could thaw. We got to the fields and saw that they were covered in about 2 inches of snow. So much for letting them thaw.

East Carolina Irates - East Carolina beat us in Clemson, SC, so we wanted to avenge that loss. We started the game with 11 players because the other cars were either late or had a blown tire. ECU took half on us by about 3 breaks. By about halftime, the rest of our team started showing up, but with very little warm up. At the end of the game, the last car showed up, and Jojah had finally arrived, only to lose this one 10-8. ECU played great, bidding everywhere on defense and moving the disc aggressively on offense.

William and Mary Dogs - Our entire team warmed up before this game, so we were finally all on the same page. With a 10 mph upwind/downwind breeze, we used zone to make it tough on the other team. The couple of zone looks we used were effective. Jojah wins this game 11-0.

Ohio State Leadbelly - This game was awesome. I remember very few things from this game, except for the fact that, by the end of it, we had beaten a worthy opponent. The offense AND defense both played well in this game. Jojah wins this game 11-8.

SUNDAY

Woke up and learned we were going to play Georgia Tech, another team that had beaten us this season already (at the Classic City Classic tournament in December). Also, the start times were pushed again from 9am to 11am. Teams were running laps and doing active warm ups in the parking lots. The first two rounds were to be played to 11 instead of 15, which means early breaks were crucial.

Pre-quarterfinals (game to 11)

Georgia Tech Tribe - We went up 3-0 on Georgia Tech when we got an upwind break. We took GT to half with a score of 6-3. After half, we traded and broke each other. Georgia Tech had some spectacular catches in the endzone. The cap was put on and Jojah put this game away 10-7.

Quarterfinals (game to 11)

UNC Darkside - We went up early on them 2-0, getting a break. There were some shifts in the game, as UNC broke our offense. Jojah responded with another break. The cap was put on and Jojah won this game 7-6. Play of the game : Peter Dempsey jumps over UNC defender for a goal.

Semifinals (game to 13)

Ohio State Leadbelly - This game was all about heart. After playing an exhausting game with UNC Darkside, our legs were almost out of gas. We had a core set of players who played the majority of the points. The game started out with UGA going up 3-2, both offenses trading. Ohio State turned on their defensive pressure and came up with an offensive point and 3 straight breaks to take a 6-3 advantage. We got a couple of breaks before half, 8-7 Leadbelly. OSU took the lead 9-8; however, Jojah D took care of the rest of the game coming up with another break, to take the 10-9 advantage. With one more break at the end of the game, Jojah won this game 12-10.

Finals (game to 15)

Michigan State Burning Couch - Last game....late in the day.... all the other teams left. It was a chilly and windy finals game. Jojah took the early 2-0 advantage after a break by the defense. After Jojah scores again, we are up 3-1. Jojah defense comes up with 2 huge breaks to take the lead 5-1. Both the teams trade until halftime, Jojah up 7-3. Jojah breaks the first point after half and a couple of points later to take the 10-4 lead. Jojah gets 2 more breaks to take a 14-6 lead. After the all rookie line fails to convert their D, Jojah wins this game and tournament 15-7.

After the game, Travis Smith got a celebratory Gatorade bath. Kevin Terry would have received one too, but he was able to escape right after the game. Both of our coaches made timely adjustments in our games throughout the weekend.

This weekend, Jojah will be heading to Charlotte, NC to face some great competition at the Queen City Tune Up. The last time we were at the Ramblewood Soccer Complex, we had just secured a bid to the College Nationals. The time before that, which was last year's Queen City Tune Up, we left as champions. This weekend, we have the opportunity to play some great teams from both the Atlantic Coast region and some powerhouses from other regions.

Jojah is seeded the 2nd seed overall in the tournament. We have the opportunity to avenge our loss from the Joint Chief Classic in pool play against East Carolina. Also, Jojah is expected to see action from no longer injured players Charlie Herrig, Taylor Nilan, and rookie dime piece, David Hooten.

First of all, Jojah would like to thank the guys who came out to scrimmage on Saturday. It was great seeing a lot of the Jojah veterans and Atlanta club players. The wind was a constant 10-14 mph with gusts of up 22 mph and the temperature never got above 40F. Jojah topped the Athens/Atlanta hodgepodge team 15-14. We hope we can do this again with better weather and field conditions.

We weren't able to videotape the game effectively because one of the rookies forgot to bring the ladder we wasked to bring.

I don't know if Jojah has ever attended a Joint Chief Classic. This past weekend, Jojah placed 2nd at the Joint Chief Classic, losing 13 - 7 in the finals to East Carolina.

SATURDAY

Georgia Warming Up

On Saturday, we came out a bit slow against Davidson, trading the first couple of points. Our defense shaped up as we took half 6-2. The second half was nothing but breaks. Jojah takes this one 11-3. The next 2 games, we played Appalachian State and Clemson B. We beat both of them 11-1. The defense played well, especially on defensive offense. Davis Waller, Josh Lowell, and Peter Dempsey established themselves as the go to guys to move the disc.

The last two games of the day were against Valdosta State and Charleston. Valdosta State put the most points up on us on Saturday with 5. Towards the end of the game, we traded points with this team. We beat them 11-5. We opened up the Charleston with 4 straight breaks. We ended up beating them 11-3.

Saturday proved to be a great day. Our offense was never broken, and our defense scored more than the other team's offenses.

SUNDAY

Gimp Squad (Taylor Nilan should also be included)

Our first game was against Emory. This is the second time we have played them this year already (3 times if you count the game at CCC). Jojah opened up the game with a strong 2-0 lead; unfortunately, things didn't remain that way as Emory tied it back at 4-4. We then got a break right before half to give us the 7-5 lead. After half, we made some adjustments and focused the sidelines to giving better calls. UGA took this game

The last two games of the day were hard for Jojah because people kept doing weird things in the weather. The semifinal game was against South Carolina, a team that beat us last Fall at the Statesboro tournament. We were excited about playing this team because we knew that they were a bit more physical than other teams (which is a good thing!). We started the game out with 2 straight breaks; they returned the favor and broke us to tie the score at 2-2. We took half 7-5 after getting another break. The game traded for the rest of the time, and we ended up winning 11-8. Towards the end of the game, the defense looked tired and we turned the disc over carelessly.

UGA v. South Carolina

The last game of the day was against East Carolina. This was one of the more exciting games to watch; unfortunately, the only people there were Jojah (+1 Hal Bailey), East Carolina (+2 parents), Ben Slade, a couple Kennesaw State guys/coaches/Jojah alum, and a photographer. The rain started pouring as this game started. Our 25 man roster produced only 15 people able to play, which was pathetic. ECU took the lead early with a 4-1 lead after they broke our offense twice. ECU broke us once again before half, taking a 7-3 lead. They took the next half 6-4, breaking us twice more to win the game 13-7. They played with a lot of emotion on defense, as they bid for most things. Congratulations to East Carolina for taking home a championship early in the season. Thank you Clemson for providing a place to play despite the steady rainfall.

This weekend, Jojah and Georgia B will be traveling to the Joint Chief Classic in Clemson, SC. We are excited about the opportunity to compete in a tournament so close to Athens, GA. We are looking forward to see how our teams performs, as well as to get some experience for our new coaches.

Last weekend's 1 Day Round Robin had a great showing of teams, but not so much for the weather. Unfortunately, we had to call the Round Robin after the 2nd round because of the steady rain fall. Thank you for all the teams that showed up. We will look forward to doing something like this in the future.

The following teams are competing in Athens, GA this Saturday to play a day of Round Robin. We are officially calling this 1 Day Round Robin.

The tournament will start at 9AM on Saturday morning. The fields are TBA for later this week. We would love to have as many fans there as possible. This Saturday will be one of many home Saturday Scrimmage/Tournament we will have this season.

Since the Dave Baldwin Memorial Classic was canceled, Jojah will be heading to Clemson, SC for the Joint Summit Classic. The tournament is on January 23rd - 24th. Thank you Ben Slade for getting us to your tournament.

This Saturday, the UGA Ultimate team is hosting a 1 Day Round Robin Tournament in Athens, GA. This will most likely be your only chance to see the Jojah ultimate team play in Athens this year. It would be great to have a large home crowd cheering us on.

The season has begun, finally!

This past Thursday, the UGA ultimate program had its first practices in snow. People were so excited about practice, they got to the fields early to throw at the fields. Unfortunately, the fields weren't open so they had to make due in the pasture.

This past weekend, Jojah went 5-3 and finished 4th at Classic City Classic LIII. I'm not going to give a lot of details about most of the games because I don't really remember games all that well.

Saturday

Saturday started out at 6:00 AM for the team. The weather forecast projected a snow flurry. At 6:30 AM, we were driving to the fields in a heavy snow storm. All the hours of lining fields for for nothing, as the snow piled on the fields. The conditions for this tournament were the worst conditions UGA has ever seen at a CCC tournament. On Saturday, the high for the day was 41 F. For Sunday, it got over 40 F for only a couple of hours.

Round 1 - Emory

Emory was a great first opponent. Jojah was psyched to play our first game of the season against a team with 2 Club Champions on it (Robert Runner and David Berendes). Also, most of the team had never played ultimate in the snow. Jojah won this game 13-8. The defense in the second half put this game away. After the Emory game, the snow stopped coming down.

Round 2 - Delaware

For information about this game, read the game notes on this one. As a team, we didn't mark particularly well. It showed as Delaware broke the mark time after time. We need to work on covering handlers better. Delaware played with a lot of resilience.

Round 3 - Georgia Southern

We beat Georgia Southern 13-10.

Round 4 - Auburn

We beat Auburn 13-7.

Round 5 - Michigan

Last year's CCC was straight up disappointing for UGA as we lost on universe point twice (v. Michigan and Notre Dame). Michigan beat us later in the year at Huck Finn. This was a game everyone seemed to focus a lot on. Matthew Bailey had one of the best games of his career on Saturday, as he scored 4 out of the 7 goals in the first half (he went on to score more goals in the 2nd half). Peter Dempsey, hit Bailey multiple times deep.

The second half saw Michigan generate 4 breaks in a row, making the score 8-8. Georgia then went on a defensive surge to finish the game 13-9.

Defensively, we had a complete game. We caused turnovers, and we turned a lot of the turnovers into breaks. Dustin Graham had a show stopping, shoulder high bid for a D, only to be called back by a foul on the mark. Big plays came from Peter Dempsey, Andrew Mistretta, Charlie Herrig, and Matt Bailey.

Sunday

Quarterfinals - Clemson

Apart from the weather and field conditions (freezing and frozen, respectively). Georgia played a pretty complete game, winning 15-9. Clemson's Ben Slade took over and threw for just about every Clemson score. Once again, Jojah's marks looked weak as Clemson's handlers were able to break at will.

Semifinals - Wisconsin

Wisconsin has won this tournament a lot. We watched them play their final points against Notre Dame in the Quarterfinals and were excited to play them. We started the game off in 3 straight breaks. Wisconsin called a time out to regroup.

We took half at 8-5. After a couple of points after half, things started happening to Georgia. Our defense was unable to stop or make adjustments on Wisconsin's handlers, whom were able to work the disc up the field effectively. Also, we got tired as a team. Our lack of practice and workouts were on display as Wisconsin simply ran us into the ground. We had opportunities to capitalize on breaks in the second half and were unable to convert. Wisconsin capitalized on all of Georgia's mistakes in the second half.

Wisconsin won this game 15-12. Overall, this game was the most fun and physical games we played in this weekend.

Fourth Place Consolation - Georgia Tech

We lost to Georgia Tech 13-10.

After our defeat, AJ made us run a lot.

Ultivillage has finally put the 2009 UPA Open Club Championship game here. It skips around a little bit, but it gets the job done. Congratulations Atlanta Chain Lightning for winning it all!

Atlanta's Chain Lightning made it to the UPA Club Finals. The Finals will be shown online at this website at 2:30 pm on Sunday. If you want to read about how Chain did in the tournament up to this point, read Dan Heijmen's tournament recap. Also, the Chain Lightning website is pretty informative about the team's perspective on the tournament.

Today, Atlanta's Chain will be playing against the Bay Area's Revolver. "The game will be the first time Chain or any open team from the southern region has ever made the finals." Chain has a huge collection of UGA grads, including:

CCC bids were due yesterday October 30, 2009. We are still accepting bids from Women's College Teams up to the point where we announce the Accepted Teams. The tournament entry fee will be $300.

The next thing you will hear about CCC is the Accepted Teams list on November 6, 2009. We will be posting these on RSD, on this website, and on the Official Tournament Website.

In other news, Chain beat Jam to move to Semis. They are playing Boston's Ironside, a team they lost to a year ago in Semis. That should be a fun game to watch.

Chain beat Johnny Bravo this morning. The game was close at half, but Chain had another strong second half. Chain then played Seattle Sockeye. They beat them 15-9 and ended the game on defense.

Tomorrow, they have a rematch with San Francisco area's Jam. Jam are the reigning champions of the club tournament. Hopefully, Atlanta's Chain Lightning can hit the ground running tomorrow, as it seems they haven't played well in the first game of each of the days.

From the looks of it, Chain's first game this morning against Ring was the most interesting. Ring took half 8-7. The final score was 15-10, Chain on top. That's a huge second half.
